Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00

there is a night driving ban on all roads in the night hours between 22:00 and 05:00 hrs for vehicles exceeding 7,5 t gross weight.

The exception is routes with vehicles belonging to the road patrol service or the armed forces, with low-noise vehicles that have an ‘L-plate’ attached next to the front license plate (requires confirmation from the truck manufacturer and must be checked every 2 years.

Austria – The Air Pollution Control Act: new traffic bans since 1st January 2014 (Styria) and from 1st July 2014 (Lower Austria) – summary

A summary of major changes concerning traffic bans in 2014.

Stricter traffic bans in the state of Vienna and in parts of Lower Austria.

Throughout the state of Vienna and in parts of Lower Austria, which have been designated protected areas under the new Air Pollution Control Act, stricter transit traffic bans will come into effect since 1st July 2014. The current bans, which have been effective since 1st July 2008 and applied to HGVs over 24 years old (Euro 0) will be extended to trucks and HGV with Euro 1 standard (over 18 years old) throughout the state of Vienna. The protected area in Lower Austria (where traffic ban is in force) has been reduced from the 250 communes to 66. From 1st January 2016 the ban will also apply to trucks and HGVs with Euro 2 standard (over 12 years old). The relevant regulations were published on 20th December 2013. All younger vehicles, which can still be used, must be identified with a color emission sticker, which can be purchased in all service stations. Exceptions to the Air Pollution Control Act concern vehicles with cost-intensive superstructures, as well as vehicles up to 12t MPW (in a convoy of maximum 4 vehicles). Detailed talks (among other concerning the question of superstructures and stickers) are still underway.

Unchanged traffic ban throughout Burgenland

The transit traffic ban that has been in effect since 1st July 2008 for vehicles with Euro 0 standard (LCVs and HGVs) remains in force with no change. Any traffic originating in or traveling to destinations in the state is allowed (without color emission stickers).

A stricter traffic ban throughout Styria

A traffic ban has been effective since 1st January 2014 for all vehicles with Euro 2 standard. Air Pollution Control regulations in Styria (LGBl 2/2012) contain traffic bans in most parts of Styria (13 districts, the city of Gratz). In the case of HGVs (over 7.5t MPW), traffic of vehicles over 20 years old (Euro 0) has been banned since 1st July 2012. On 1st January 2013 a stricter ban was introduced for vehicles with Euro 1 standard (over 17 years old). Since 1st January 2014 the ban has applied to Euro 2 vehicles (over 14 years old). Exceptions include retrofitted vehicles and specialized vehicles with cost-intensive superstructures, fairground and circus vehicles, historical vehicles and self-propelled industrial machines. The issue of identification with color emission stickers is still under discussion.

A stricter night traffic ban throughout Tirol in force already since 1 November 2013

In Tirol the area along the 84-km stretch of the Inn Valley A12 motorway has been designated a protected area (from the state border at Kunfstein as far as Zirl, west of Innsbruck), with a night traffic ban for HGVs over 7.5t MPW. The ban is enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and in the winter half-year, from 8:00 p.m., on Sundays and holidays from 11:00 p.m. For the time being, the night traffic ban applies to all goods vehicles with Euro 0-5 standard and EEV vehicles. The exception for vehicles complying with EEV norm was not prolonged. The exception for vehicles with Euro 6 standard ends on 31st December 2015 (the ban for Euro 6 vehicles comes into effect on 1st January 2016). The 24-hour traffic ban for goods vehicles with Euro 0-1 standard (over 7.5t MPW) is still in effect along the Inn Valley A12 motorway as well as the traffic ban for some Euro 2 vehicles (tractor units, vehicles with trailers).

SPECIAL LOCAL TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

All vehicles registered before 1st January 1992, regardless of their MPW, on all roads of the provinces of Vienna, Burgenland and Lower Austria are subject to a total traffic ban.

Tyrol

Sectoral driving ban from 8 July 2019

The use of the A 12 Inntal motorway, from KP 6.35 in the municipality of Langkampfen to KP 72.00 in the municipality of Ampass by articulated lorries or semi-trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes and lorries with trailers where the sum of the maximum permissible masses of both vehicles is more than 7.5 tonnes is prohibited when the following goods are being transported:

a) all waste included in the European Waste Catalogue (in accordance with the Commission Decision on Waste Catalogue 2000/532 / EC, as last amended by Commission Decision 2014/955 / EU

Traffic ban - exhaust emissions

There is a low emission zone on the Austrian motorway A12.

From 1st May 2017 the official Austrian sticker, that shows the Euro standard of the vehicle, has to be put on the windshield of the vehicle. For more information about those stickers go to 'National legal framework' on this page.

Minimum standard that has to be met by lorries more than 7.5t on the A12 between km 6,35 and 90,00:

B170 – Brixentaler Bundesstrasse: from km 9,5 in Hopfgarten i.B. to km 26,03 in Kirchberg, for heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, except for army vehicles, towing and breakdown services, urgent repair services for refrigeration or power supply facilities, as well as heavy goods vehicles registered by companies domiciled in the communes of Hopfgarten in Brixen, Westendorf, Brixen in Th., Kirchberg i.T., or heavy goods vehicles loaded or unloaded in the same communes as their point of origin or destination. B171 – Tiroler Strasse (see also under Wörgl and Rattenberg) from km 1,984 to km 3,857 in Kufstein.

B172 - Walchseestrasse, from the Niederndorf state border in the direction of Niederndorf and

B176 – Kössener Bundesstrasse: vehicles of over 16t MPW, from km 0,0 (intersection with the B312 in St.Johann) to km 14,0 (Schwendt-Dorf) and heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, except for local traffic from km 0,0 (intersection with the B312 in St.Johann) to km 17,7 (intersection with the B312 in Kössen).

B177 – Seefelder Strasse on the Zirlerberg route, for vehicles of over 7.5t MPW driving downhill, except for heavy goods vehicles registered by companies located in the communes of Seefeld, Scharnitz, Leutasch and Reith bei Seefeld, or domiciled in the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz, Wolfratshausen or Weilheim-Schöngau, as well as Austrian vehicles carrying goods to or from the Seefeld high plateau of the above-mentioned districts. The ban also applies to vehicles with trailers travelling uphill, except for empty runs and vehicles authorised for the descent.

B177 – Seefelder Strasse, L35 Buchener Landesstrasse and L36 Möserer Landesstrasse: on the Zirlerberg route, L35 Buchener Landesstrasse, L36 Möserer Landesstrasse as well as on all roads of the Seefeld high plateau, traffic ban on vehicles carrying dangerous goods whose cargo has to be identified by orange panels (Rn 10.500 ADR), except for supply services to the Seefeld plateau.

B177 – Seefelder Strasse: vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from Zirl (km 0,665) to Scharnitz (km 21,360).

B178 – Lofererstrasse: from km 0,00 (Kirchbichl) to km 49,63 (Waidring) there is a ban on heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, with the exception of low-noise vehicles (Art.8b of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1967 (KDV)), motorway maintenance service, federal army vehicles, towing service, breakdown assistance, disaster relief, urgent repairs to refrigeration and energy supply facilities, public security services and heavy commercial vehicles loaded or unloaded in (originating in or travelling to) the district of Kitzbühel or the communes of Ellmau, Scheffau, Söll, Kirchbichl and Wörgl in the district of Kufstein.

From km 0,00 (Kirchbichl) to km 49,63 (Waidring) there is a local traffic ban on commercial vehicles of over 7.5t MPW which are loaded with chippings, glass fragments, scrap, cars, slag, cement, empty containers, machinery, packaging materials, building materials and prefabricated concrete sections, except for journeys by commercial vehicles which are loaded or unloaded in (originating in or travelling to) the districts of Kitzbühel, Lienz, St Johann im Pongau and Zell am See and also in Söll, Ellmau and Scheffau in the district of Kufstein. This exception shall apply only if at least a major part (i.e. over 51%) of the loading or unloading operations takes place in the districts or localities exempted from the ban.

The carriage of goods covered by the ban in addition to other freight is permitted up to 10% of the total weight of the load. The term "building materials" designates bulk goods such as chippings, sand, gravel, bricks, insulating and filling substances, steel reinforcing rods and tiles.

B179 – Fernpassstrasse, between km 11,955 at Nassereith and km 67,944 at Vils, trucks of over 7.5t MPW, with the exception of those having their headquarters in the districts of Imst, Innsbruck-Land, Innsbruck-Stadt, Landeck, Reutte, in the rural districts of Biberach, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Lindau, Oberallgäu, Ostallgäu, Ravensburg, Unterallgäu, Weilheim-Schongau, in the municipalities of Kaufbeuren, Kempten or Memmingen, in the commune of Samnaun or in the district and valley communities of Bruggrafenamt or Vinschgau as well as journeys serving solely for the purpose of loading or unloading vehicles in the said places, and towing and breakdown assistance services.

B180 – Reschenstrasse from km 0,00 in Landeck to km 46,22 (Nauders – State border): heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, in both directions, except for journeys by trucks belonging to companies with their headquarters along the B315 between km 0,00 and km 46,22 and its lateral valleys along the Vintschgauer Staatstrasse (SS38 and SS40) beginning at the Reschen state border via SS40 Reschenstrasse and via SS38 Stilfserjochstrasse as far as Naturns at km 189,5 on the SS38 and its lateral valleys, excluding journeys by trucks which are loaded and unloaded in the district of Landeck, in the valley parishes of Vintschgau and Bruggrafenamt, in Unterengadin and Samnaun (the place of origin or destination); this ban does not apply to journeys by heavy goods vehicles which are loaded or unloaded in the following areas if the journey begins and ends in these areas: in the State of Voralberg, in the Principality of Liechtenstein, in the Swiss cantons of Graubünden (north of Chur-Davos), Glarus, St-Gallen, Appenzell, Thurgau, in the rural districts of Lindau, Ravensburg and Biberach, if the incoming and outgoing journey passes through the Voralberg, in the rural districts of Bodenseekreis, Sigmaringen, Konstanz, Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreise, Tuttligen and Rottweil, in the district and valley communities of Bozen/Bolzano, Salten-Schlern, Überetsch-Südtiroler Unterland, in the autonomous province of Triento and in the region of Venetia.

B182 – Brennerstrasse, in both directions, heavy goods vehicles, road trains and articulated vehicles of over 3.5t MPW from km 7,4 (the ommune of Schönberg) to km 35,10 (the commune of Gries a. Br.) and L38 Ellbögener Strasse, in both directions, from km 10,35 to km 22,60.

Exceptions: operations to or from this area for the loading or unloading of at least 51% of the goods, but at least 1000 kg; transport to and from this area for vehicles with company headquarters in the area; deliveries and collection in the Stubaital from km 7,4 of the B182 to the B183 intersection; Motorway Department and army vehicles; breakdown assistance vehicles; subject to certain conditions (i.e. only for return trips to Innsbruck or Brenner), the B182 may be used to and from the Auer garage in Matrei, if an onward trip is involved, vehicles should take the A13 motorway from Matrei.

B186 – Ötztalstrasse, in the Höhe Brücke area near Pill: vehicles of over 16t MPW, with the exception of vehicles under escort which use the central carriageway.

B189 – Miemingerstrasse, from km 0,00 in Telfs to km 9,80 in Mieming: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, except for local traffic.

B199 – Tannheimer Strasse: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW between km 0,0 (the municipality of Weissenbach am Lech) and km 22,65 (the municipality of Schattwald) in both directions, except for residents and traffic to/from these localities.

L6 – Tuxer Strasse from km 0,00 (Mayrhofen) to km 17,225 (Tux, Hintertux section). Night ban on trucks with the MPW of over 7.5t driving uphill between 22:00 and 7:00 with the sole exception of the transport of milk and foodstuffs.

L7 – Jenbacher Landesstrasse (Kasbachstrasse): vehicles of over 3.5t MPW, except for local traffic.

L11 – Völser Strasse, in both directions: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW between km 5,910 and km 6,980; in Unterperfuss from km 11,410 to km 11,960; in Inzing from km 15,700 to km 17.520; and in Pfaffenhofen from km 26,052 to km 27,278.

L35 and L36 – see under B177 above.

L38 – Ellbögenstrasse : from the intersection with the motorway access road in Patsch to the junction with the B182 Brennerstrasse in both directions, for vehicles with trailers, with the exception of journeys to/ from loading operations in Ellbögen, Mühlbach, Matrei, Patsch and Pfons on the section between the intersection of the L38 Ellbögnerstrasse and the motorway access road in Patsch and the junction with the B182 Brennerstrasse at Matrei am Brenner, together with breakdown assistance and towing services, public security service, the federal army and motorway maintenance service.

L39 – Erpfendorfer Landesstrasse throughout its length for heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW in the direction of Erpfendorf-Kössen, with the exception of journeys for the sole transport of milk, fresh meat, livestock, perishable foodstuffs, newspapers and periodicals, as well as vehicles with their headquarters in Kössen, Schwendt, Walchsee, Rettenschöss, Niderndorf, Niederndorferberg, Erl, Ebbs, Oberndorf i.T., Going, St.Johann i.T., Kirchdorf i.T. and Waidring; traffic travelling to or from these localities is also exempt, provided that loading and unloading take place exclusively in these localities.

L211 – Unterinntalstrasse: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW between km 14,755 and km 17,00 (the municipalities of Angerberg and Breitenbach am Inn) and in the municipality of Münster between Wiesing and Münster (a distance of approximately 2,6 km), except for the traffic to/from these localities .

L261 – Gräner Strasse: ban on vehicles with an MPW of over 7.5t carrying out a transit operation for which Eco-points are compulsory according to the Journal of Laws, No. 879/1992.

L274 – Kirchdorfer Landesstrasse: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from km 0,00 (the B312 intersection at Kirchdorf) to km 3,4 (the B176 intersection) with the exception of local traffic.

L348 – Spisser Landesstrasse between Pfunds-Zollhäuser and Spissermühle in the months during which the way of Spisser is covered with snow or ice: a driving ban for heavy goods vehicles with trailers.

Kitzbühel – A daily driving ban in the urban area of Kitzbühel from 5th July to 5th September and from 20th December to 20th March, in both cases between 10:00 to 6:00, with the exception of access journeys to the loading zone for the town centre hotels, cyclists, taxis and motor vehicles belonging to the authorised owners listed by name in the regulations published in "Bote für Tirol" (Tyrol Official Journal) NΕ747/1993 and NΕ1273/1983.

Kufstein – Access to various motorways prohibited for heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW with the exception of lical traffic; heavy transit vehicles may use the alternative route Kufstein/Zell – new Wildbichlerstrasse – old Wildbichlerstrasse – access road Kufstein/Nord – Hochauser in both directions.

Wörgl – Tiroler Strasse (B171), Brixentaler Strasse (B170) in transit through the municipality of Wörgl on the B171 between the end of the Wörgl – West motorway (km 19,087) and the junction with the motorway access road at Wörgl-Ost and also on the B170 from the Luech turn-off (km 4,65) to the B171 Wörgl – Ortsmitte, trucks of over 7.5t MPW, with the exception of local traffic in Wörgl and Wildschönau.

Rattenberg – Tiroler Strasse (B171): ban on the transport of dangerous goods with the exception of deliveries in the district of Rattenberg and Radfeld. The ban applies also to heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW on Sundays and public holidays from 22:00 to 5:00 the next day; outside these periods there is a driving ban on heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW, except for the vehicles registered in Radfeld, loading activities in the district of Rattenberg and Radfeld as well as authorised vehicles (including motorway and breakdown services, and transport of timber outside the territory of the municipality).

Vorarlberg

B197 – Arlbergpass Bundesstrasse: a general driving ban on road trains and heavy goods vehicles between St Jakob am Arlberg and Alpe Rauz (Swiss border) in both directions. Instead, vehicles must use the Arlberg Tunnel (where a toll must be paid).
L190 – heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from km 23,713 to km 25,706 in the direction of Rankwiel and from km 25,548 to km 23,713 in the direction of Tisis, with the exception of vehicles loading or unloading in the town of Feldkirch and transit traffic heading from Liechtenstein.

Styria

B78 – Obdacher Strasse: heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW between Bad St. Leonhard (km 23.518) and Obdacher Sattel (km 36,600).

GENERAL BAN ON NIGHT DRIVING

The ban between 22:00 and 5:00 for heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW.

Exceptions: vehicles belonging to the motorway maintenance service; vehicles belonging to the Federal Army which are essential for the pursuit of military operations; low-noise vehicles with the green ‘L’ plate. The latter are limited to the maximum speed of 60km/h, although a speed of 80km/h may be authorised on certain sections.

Note:Derogations to driving restrictions will be authorised only in case of journeys which serve exclusively for the transport of milk, fresh meat and livestock, perishable foodstuffs (with the exception of deep frozen goods), newspapers and periodicals, essential repairs to refrigeration plant or the operation of road maintenance vehicles to enable traffic flow to be maintained; in all other cases an exceptional authorisation shall be granted only if there is a substantial public interest in doing so. The applicant must prove, in both instances, that the journey cannot be avoided by organisational measures or by choosing a different means of transport.

Carinthia

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW from 23:00 to 5:00 in the city of Klagenfurt.

Lower Austria Heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from 22:00 to 6:00 on the B18 Traisentalstrasse between Berndorf and Traisen and from 22:00 to 6:00 on the B3 Wachaustrasse and the B133 between Mautern and Melk.

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW from 22:00 to 6:00 in the area of Mödling (communes of Brunn/Geb, Hinterbrühl, Maria Enzerndorf, Mödling, Perchtoldsdorf).

These restrictions are indicated by road signs.

In the city of Wiener Neustadt, a driving ban between 23:00 and 5:00.

Upper Austria

Heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from 22:00 to 5:00 in the city of Wels (B157 and B138 – eastern ring road).

Heavy goods vehicles of over 5t MPW from 22:00 to 6:00 (the B138 and A9 from the state border).

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW from 22:00 to 6:00 in the city of Linz.

Styria

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW from 23:00 to 4:30 in the city of Graz (with the exception of food supply traffic and access to rail/road services).

Tyrol

Heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW from 22:00 to 5:00 on the B181 Achenseestrasse between Wiesing and the state border in Achenkirch with the exception of the transport to/from Hinterriss, Fischl and Achental.

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW between 22:00 and 5:00 in the city of Innsbruck (with the exception of low-noise vehicles).

Heavy goods vehicles of over 7.5t MPW between 1st November and 30th April from Monday to Saturday from 20:00 to 5:00 (between 1st May and 31st October from Monday to Saturday from 22:00 to 5:00) and on Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 to 5:00 on the A12 between km 20,359 in Kundl and km 66,780 in Ampass.

Exceptions: The transport of perishable foodstuffs, newspapers, medicines, livestock, construction or road maintenance vehicles, breakdown or emergency vehicles, vehicles whose NOx emission is less than 3g/kWh (Euro 4 and 5).

Since 1st November 2008 heavy goods vehicles and articulated vehicles with an MPW of over 7.5t and heavy goods vehicles with trailers if the sum of the MPW of the truck and the trailer exceeds 7.5t, on both lanes of the A12 and in both directions between Langkampfen (km 6) and Zirl (km 90,0) between 1st May and 31st October from Monday to Saturday from 22:00 to 5:00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 to 5:00. Between 1st November and 30th April from Monday to Saturday from 20:00 to 5:00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 to 5:00.

Exceptions:The transport of perishable foodstuffs (but not deep-frozen goods); transport of livestock; transport of heavy goods vehicles (Euro 5 class) until 31st October 2013 and transport of trucks Euro 6 class (until 31st December 2015) if this can be proved by the relevant documents.

Since 1.11.2013 - exceptions only for Euro 6.

Fines for breaching the ban:

up to 2 180 Euro – as par § 30 act 1, line 4 of the Air Pollution Control Act (IG-L)

up to 1 500 Euro – resulting from preliminary guarantees, § 37a of the Traffic Code (VStG) (as par § 30 point 3 of the Air Pollution Control Act (IG-L) )

B310 – Mühlviertler Strasse from the border crossing in Wullowitz to the A7 Mühlkreis motorway, and then via the A7, the A1 western motorway via the A25 Linzer motorway, Terminal – exit 13.

To Salzburg station via:

A1 – West motorway from the Walserberg border crossing to exit 288 (north of Salzburg), then via Salzburgerstrasse, Vogelweiderstrasse, Gnigler Strasse, Lastenstrasse.

To the Brennersee rail station via:

A13 – Brenner motorway from the Brenner border crossing point to the Brennersee exit and on via the B182 Brenner Bundesstrasse.

For the aforementioned journeys a completed document (CIM/UIRR Convention*) must be presented, certifying that the vehicle or its superstructure (the swap body, the container) is to be or has already been transported by rail.

Driving bans on certain ramps of A12 and A13 motorways (1 July 2020, 15:20)

On 1 July, the Austrian authorities informed of new driving bans being implemented on certain exit ramps on the A12 and A13 motorways.

At the Wattens Junction on the A12, goods vehicles (truck, haulage trailer or truck and trailer), whose combination exceeds 12 meters, cannot use the ramps on both lanes from 06:00 to 10:00 from Mondays to Saturdays. Vehicles departing or destined to the following municipalities are exempt from this provision: Baumkirchen, Fritzens, Kolsass, Kolsassberg, Volders, Wattens, Wattenberg and Weer.

At the Innsbruck South Junction on the A13, goods vehicles (truck, haulage trailer or truck and trailer), whose combination exceeds 12 meters, cannot use the ramps on both lanes from 07:00 to 11:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 from Mondays to Saturdays. Vehicles departing or destined to the following municipalities are exempt from this provision: Natters, Mutters, Schoenberg im Stubaital, Fulpmes Mieders, Telfes in Stubai, Neustift im Stubaital, Mühlbachl, Pfons, Matrei am Brenner, Navis, Steinach am Brenner, Trins , Gschnitz, Schmirn, Vals, Gries am Brenner, Obernberg am Brenner, Gotzens and Birgitz.

Members are advised that both provisions do not have an expiration date.

Austria – HGV driving ban in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung

By virtue of Article 43 and 94 of the Road Traffic Act of 1960, in order to ensure road safety and uninterrupted traffic flow, the District Governor has issued the following announcement:

§ 1 All heavy goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 7.5 t are prohibited from driving on the B16 road in the area between KP 48 300 (roundabout connecting B16 and L212) and KP 52 120 (Klingenbach border crossing), in both directions.

§ 2 The ban does not apply to traffic originating or terminating in the cities of Eisenstadt, Rust, districts of Eisenstadt-Umgebung and Mattersburg, and the Hungarian district of Sopron.

§ 3 Information about this prohibition is displayed by road signs 'No heavy goods vehicles’ with a gross weight of 7.5 t' with an additional plate reading 'except for traffic originating or terminating in Eisenstadt, Rust, Eisenstadt-Umgebung, Mattersburg and Sopron. "

HGV driving bans in Austria 2020

The 2020 driving ban calendar applies to trucks, trucks with trailers and tractor units with semi-trailers over 7.5 t MAM.

On the A 12 Inntal motorway and the A 13 Brenner motorway:
if the destination is in Germany or in a country that is to be reached via Germany,

on all Saturdays from 25 July to 29 August (with the exception of 15 August), from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
on 3 October from 0:00 to 10:00 p.m. On the A4 motorway from the Schwechat junction to the Austrian-Hungarian border (Nickelsdorf):
on all Saturdays from 25 July to 29 August inclusive, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (in both directions, except for vehicles arriving at or leaving from certain districts along the A 4)

On the following (federal) roads on all Saturdays from 25 July to 29 August, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (in both directions and only outside the local area):

B 178 Loferer Straße from Lofer to Wörgl
B 320 Ennstalstraße from kilometric point 4, 500

There are a number of exceptions similar to those that apply to the weekend driving ban, for example for vehicles transporting periodicals, but also for empty runs until 10 a.m. to the driver's place of residence or company premises.

Tires

The fitting obligation from 1st November to 15th April.

If not fitted – high fines from 35 Euro up to 5 000 Euro.

Heavy goods vehicles of over 3.5t MPW must have M+S (mud and snow) winter tires fitted on at least one driving axle with the minimal tread depth of 6mm.

For couches the obligation is in effect from 1st November to 15th March.

Chains

From 1st November to 15th April vehicles must be equipped with at least two chains per one driving axle. There are exceptions for line-course coaches. The obligation concerns roads covered with snow or ice.

Tires with spikes are prohibited for vehicles of over 3.5t MPW.

The maximum blood-alcohol content – 0,049 ‰

Driving under the influence of alcohol is severely punished:

from 0,5 to 0,8‰ – from 218 up to 3633 Euro and the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of min. 3 weeks
from 0,8 to 0,119‰ – from 581 up to 3633 Euro and the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of min. 4 weeks
from 0,12 to 0,159‰ – from 872 up to 4360 Euro and the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of min. 3 months
over 0,16‰ – from 1162 up to 5813 Euro and the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of min. 4 months

For traffic offenses a police officer has the right to give the offender a fine of up to €36, collected on the spot.

In relation to foreigners, a police officer has the right to demand a deposit equal of the fine or up to 1308 Euro. The denial of the deposit may result in confiscation of personal property of a value equal to the amount of the deposit imposed.

Examples of fines for some traffic offences:

speeding – from 11 up to 65 Euro + (possibly) the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of 2 weeks
incorrect stopping and parking – 21 Euro and in situation posing danger to other road users – from 58 up to 72 Euro
enforcing the right of way – from 36 up to 72 Euro + (possibly) the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of 3 months
overtaking in a ban zone – from 72 up to 144 Euro + (possibly) the withdrawal of a driving licence for a period of 3 months
not using the seatbelts – 35 Euro
using a mobile phone without a hands-free set – 50 Euro

Since 1st July 2005 so-called “yellow cards” (penalty points) have been introduced which are also used in regard to foreigners. If a foreigner is given the card for the third time, he/she may be banned from driving in the territory of Austria for a period of min. 3 months.

Note: There is a risk of severe police controls, checking the technical condition of vehicles (especially tires, brakes, having a first aid kit and a warning triangle).

A poor technical condition of a vehicle or the lack of the basic equipment required puts the owner at risk of high fines or even the withdrawal of the vehicle.

Measures in case of an accident: An accident in which someone was injured has to be immediately reported to the police. In case of material losses, this obligation exists only if there has been no mutual identification. There is a duty to report the fact of a road accident in which there were casualties (especially cyclists and pedestrians) even if they suffered minor injuries.

Drivers who rely on cyclists or pedestrians’ assurances that nothing had happened to them and they do not call the police or ambulance, run the risk of incurring a high penalty of up to 2 180 Euro. According to the Road Code, the driver is obliged to inform the police even about cases of minor or inconspicuous injuries.

If the police is called to the scene of the accident in which no one was injured and where all the participants of the accident exchanged their personal data, a fee of 36 Euro is paid, if it turns out later that someone is injured though, one can request a refund of the fee.
