The country has not imposed any restrictions in the international heavy traffic.

In Belgium, when it rains or snows there is a total ban on overtaking for vehicles of over 7.5 t MPW.

Abnormal load transports


Motorway traffic bans

  • Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited from Saturday 06h00 to Monday 09h00
  • Movements of abnormal loads with a width exceeding 3.50 m or length exceeding 30.00 m or height exceeding 4.30 m are prohibited from 06h00 to 21.00h

Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited on public holidays:

1 January, Easter Monday,1 May, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, 21 July, 15 August, 1 November, 11 November and 25 December. The prohibition applies from 16h00 on the previous day to 09h00 on the following day.


Traffic is banned from 06h00 to 09h00 and from 16h00 to 21h00 on the following motorway sections:

  • Antwerp R1 ring motorway: section between interchanges n°2 (Antwerpen-Noord) and n°6 (left bank)
  • Brussels R0 motorway ring
  • Charleroi R9 small ring
  • motorways A604-A15 (Seraing-Hognoul link) and the Loncin interchange, in the Seraing-Hognoul direction
  • Liège motorway link (E40/E42-E25 link) between Burenville (interchange n°33) and Tilff (interchange n°42) as well as the A003 between the Loncin interchange and the Cheratte interchange

Traffic is banned from 06h00 to 09h00 in the Brussels direction and from 16h00 to 21h00 in the opposite direction on the following motorway sections:

  • A10 (E40) Brussels-Oostende motorway between Alost and Brussels
  • A7 (E19) Brussels-Mons motorway between Hal and Brussels
  • A3 (E40) Brussels-Liège motorway between Heverlee (interchange E40/E314) and Brussels
  • A1 (E19) Brussels-Antwerp motorway between Malines and Brussels
  • E411 (A4) Brussels-Namur motorway between Wavre (interchange n°8) and Brussels

Traffic bans on other roads

  • Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited from Saturday 06h00 to Monday 06h00
  • Movements of abnormal loads with a width exceeding 4.00 m or length exceeding 30.00 m are prohibited from 06h00 to 21h00

Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited on public holidays:

In the conurbations of Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Charleroi, Kortrijk, Gand, Hasselt, Liège, Louvain, Malines, Mons, Namur, Oostende, Tournai and Verviers, movements of abnormal loads are prohibited from 07.00h to 09.00h and from 16.00h to 18.00


Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited on Fridays from 15h00 to 22h00 during the holiday period from 27 June to 4 September inclusive.


Traffic conditions

Movements of abnormal loads are prohibited when there is snow or ice on the road and in case of fog, snowfall or rain reducing visibility to less than 200 metres.

The user or driver of the abnormal load vehicle or, where applicable, the traffic coordinator, must inspect the selected route at least 5 calendar days before the planned abnormal load transport.


Regional holidays:

  • 11th July (only in Flanders and Brussels)
  • 27th September (only in Wallonia and Brussels)
  • The above-mentioned apply only to public offices

Special attention should be paid to specified regulations concerning permits regarding the above-mentioned oversized vehicles.


Carriage of dangerous goods (ADR)


On roads and in tunnels, which are marked with road signs C24a, C24b and C24c – e.g. Kennedytunnel in the direction of Antwerp, the tunnel under the canal between Gent/Ternheuzen and Zelzate, an exit of motorway “Long Thier” in Hoei – there are various carrying bans for individual types of the ADR freight. Diversions are marked with road signs.

Sign C 24a (a round white sign with a red border and an orange truck) means no entry for vehicles carrying hazardous goods that need labelling.

Sign C 24b (a round sign with a red border and a black car with flashing lights) means no entry for vehicles carrying loads concerned with classes 1, 4.2, 5.2 and 4.1 bearing a D or a DT code, or numbers such as UN 2956, from 3221 to 3242 and 3251, as well as tankers that need labelling with class symbols 2.1, 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1 or 5.2.

Sign C 24c (a round sign with a red border and a tanker on blue waves) means no entry for vehicles carrying water-polluting goods, i.e.: all goods that need labelling with plates 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 8 and 9; loads of class 7 listed as UN 2912, 2913, 2919, 2977, 2978, 3321, 3322, 3324, 3325, 3327, 3328, 3329, 3330, 3331 and 3333; all transportation of radioactive substances of class 7 in tanker lorries and radioactive waste of class 7.


The locations of the aforementioned signs in Belgium:

  • C24a: the city of Brussels
  • C 24a together with a sign “uitgezondered plaatselijk verkehr” (local traffic) in the area of Knokke-Heist from the Dutch border westwards, from road N376 (Sluisstraat-Dudzelestraat) northwards, from Heistlaan eastwards
  • C 24a in Brügge on road R30 (Hoefijzerlaan) in the tunnel under 't Zand
  • C 24b in Kennedytunnel in Antwerp (R1)
  • C 24b in the Cointe te Liuk tunnel (road A 602)
  • C 24b in the industrial district of Zuid te Mechelen
  • C 24b on road E 34/N 49 when one gets to the Zelzate tunnel

Local traffic bans: heavy goods vehicles of the total gross weight exceeding 3,5 tones cannot enter the centre of Antwerp. Traffic is diverted via the Antwerp ring road. It does not apply to destination approaches.
